 Hey There Weekend Dreamers! Today we’re continuing with our “Street to the Beach” series here in fabulous Jacksonville Beach, Florida! Why do we do “Street to the Beach” you may ask? Well, because all of life’s greatest paths lead to the beach - of course! So we’ll start our morning on the land, and we’ll end our morning with our feet in the sand. So let’s set our watches and get moving. We’ll be going on a walking tour throughout the streets and beach in the fun and happening town of Jacksonville Beach. This small beach town, outside of Jacksonville, has so much to offer, for both locals and tourists alike. There’s literally always something going on here! Whether it’s festivals and outdoor concerts at the Seawalk Pavilion, or art walks, car shows, and movies under the stars. It’s never a boring day in Jax Beach, and I’d love for you to join me as I explore this lively little beach town. My ultimate goal with “Street to the Beach” is to bring a little slice of the coast your way. Tomorrow, I’ll be taking you LIVE to Vilano Beach, Florida. If you didn’t catch my last Vilano Beach livestream definitely go check it out. We certainly did some exploring that day! And I showed you the walking distance to the beach from six of the downtown area hotels, including: 1- The Saint Augustine Beach House 2- OceanView Lodge 3- Hampton Inn & Suites Vilano Beach - St. Augustine 4- Holiday Inn Express St. Augustine - Vilano Beach 5- Hyatt Place St. Augustine 6- Magic Beach Motel And it’s that last hotel on the list - the Magic Beach Motel - which was the image for my thumbnail - that really caught my eye. The Magic Beach Motel was built back in 1951, and it’s so full of color and loaded with tropical charm. I painted a 6x8 inch watercolor of the old building because I was so fascinated with this one remaining retro-style hotel in town, sitting there surrounded by newer and larger style buildings throughout the rest of the little village. Did you know the Magic Beach Motel was the set for a late 90’s television series? Called ‘Safe Harbor’- the story was set in the fictional town of Magic Beach, Florida! I’d love to know your thoughts on older, seemingly outdated motels and hotels, vs. newer, larger hotel style accommodations when traveling. While newer facilities can offer every comfort of home when staying overnight on the road, or on a week long beach vacation, it’s also sad to see these older buildings being demolished one by one. I do hope this little motel makes it in the face of progress. And I hope it remains a tiny little slice of retro beach life. If one ever wondered what life was like, and what going to the beach was like in the 1950’s, I look to this little building to imagine. Maybe it was the exact same as going to the beach now? Sand pails, flip flops, sunblock, and umbrellas. Coolers and drinks. Beach bags, books to read, and chairs to sit on. Sandy feet on the return trip. All seemingly the same as today… just minus a smartphone, of course. Maybe it was all the same, but maybe life was all a bit more carefree than everything is now. Who knows? I take skin care and protection very seriously and hope I can help you in any way when it comes to protecting your own skin as well. So, today I’m sharing my specific experiences with, and opinions on, a variety of different types and brands of sunblocks. These are my favorite sunblocks, in order of worst to best. Some I do not like, some I practically hate, and some I absolutely love. There are seven sunblocks on my list, and an 8th ‘bonus’ sunblock is not on the list and I discuss why in this video. And as we walked 2.30miles together, well, we saw a lot: *State Route A1A/Atlantic Boulevard. *Beach Diner. *ABBQ (Atlantic Beach Barbecue). *Many large murals. *Salt Air Inn & Suites. *The Hotel Palms. *A lovely water fountain in an outdoor garden at the Community Presbyterian Church. *Atlantic Beach Elementary School. *A clock tower memorial in front of the Atlantic Beach Police and Fire Departments that we discovered was a Tide Clock! *A beautiful sea turtle statue memorial. *Frazier Park. *The Continental Hotel site landmark - which we learned was the site of a hotel in Atlantic Beach built by Henry Flager in the early 1900's. We’re here to find, and watch, an Amtrak train! Specifically, we’re seeking out the Amtrak Auto Train as it travels southbound from Virgina toward Orlando, Florida. The train’s route ends in the town of Sanford, and we will be seeing the Auto Train on the final few hours of its route. I’m very excited for today’s adventure for two reasons: 1) I love Green Cove Springs! It’s such a beautiful, small, old town with a lot of history. And 2) I’ve been on board many Amtrak trains over the years, on a variety of different traveling adventures. We found the Amtrak Auto Train on the final leg of its journey in The Sunshine State! Plus - we got to see another Amtrak train as an added bonus. I had so much fun with y'all today in beautiful Green Cove Springs, Florida! What a lovely, small town, right along the banks of the St. Johns River, just outside the greater Jacksonville area. I'm so glad I was able to give you a brief walking tour of the downtown before we went to see the Amtrak trains. And with our second phone service not working, we had a lot of help in the chat to keep us updated on where the trains were located. So because of your help, we got to see not just the one train, but two. First we saw the Amtrak Silver Service train, and then we saw the Amtrak Auto Train. I was experiencing seeing this train up close for the first time with you today, and very surprised with the amount of auto cars that were on the back of the train - way more than I ever imagined, seeing it in real life. Have you ever been on an Amtrak train? I shared just a few of my Amtrak stories with you today. I have many more, but I also shared which routes are my favorite. However, there were a couple things (non-train related) that may have been just as interesting and exciting on our walk. If you watched, I'm guessing maybe you know what they were? Well, just in case, here they are: 1- The Town Time Capsule - a completely unexpected and fascinating surprise! 2- The cat in the window! We will be officially (unofficially) naming the cat Binx The Great - in honor of Binx The Great. And I will be returning to the storefront window on a future stream to find this sweet, beautiful kitty once again. By the way, we hardly touched on the fact that Green Cove Springs is turning 150 years old this year 2024. In November the town will be holding a celebration in honor of their 150 years as a community. Let’s find some murals, parks, the iconic Murray Hill Theatre, shops and restaurants, and a bunch of the area parks and green spaces - all nestled along the area just off the banks of the St. Johns River near downtown Jacksonville, Florida. After walking from the Murray Hill Theatre all the way to the fabulous Murray Hill mural right by U.S. 17, we’ll cross under the bridge and walk through the historic Riverside Avondale neighborhood. There, we’ll see four parks and end the walking tour at the foot of the St. Johns River. Ummm, wow - this was amazing! Here’s some highlights - beyond the simple fact that we learned SO much - we saw murals, the iconic Murray Hill Theatre built in the late 1940’s, bees, a multitude of flowers, two different black cats - one of whom I got to have a deep conversation with and take a selfie with. We saw many unique and old houses, drank our morning coffee together, walked 2.27 miles down Edgewood Avenue, saw the roundabout construction taking place, and to top it all off, we got to see two Amtrak trains fly by! Spoiler - we’re having a railroad themed Floridian Adventure next week! It was definitely quite an adventure in lovely Jacksonville, Florida, and I’m so very grateful you could join me. I’m wearing Amazon brand UV protection, zip-up long sleeves with a hood, and it keeps me cool, while protecting me from any sunburn whatsoever. 5- Hydrate! Hurricane Season 2024 begins today June 1st Hey There Weekend Dreamers!! Life is like a hurricane - and today is the first official day of hurricane season for 2024. Hurricane season spans June 1st through November 30th each year. If you live in a hurricane prone area, it’s extremely important to be prepared and have a hurricane kit fully stocked - each season. This will be my 8th hurricane season living in The Sunshine State. Over the years I have compiled a ‘Life Is Like A Hurricane’ playlist (linked below) with videos about my experiences throughout previous hurricane seasons. And probably the most important of which includes a ‘hurricane supply kit’ video to help give you some ideas and recommendations on supplies you may want to stock up on - also linked below. So as we mark the start of yet another season with some potential for wild, windy, and wet weather in Florida, this is simply my friendly reminder to be prepared in advance of any storm, and most importantly, why keeping a sense of humor about these storms has helped me immensely each year.
