535) Day 17 - Castillo de San Marcos is closed during the federal government shutdown - St. Augustine, Florida

As we finish off day seventeen of the United States government being closed for business...

The Castillo de San Marcos in historic downtown St. Augustine, Florida continues to remain closed during the current federal government shutdown.

Recently, I went to the Castillo and did a YouTube livestream from the St. Augustine Inlet waterfront, near the fort area on Wednesday, October 8th (linked below). And, honestly, it was such a strange sight to see such a familiar and iconic place all closed up.

Normally, when I livestream the sunrise in St. Augustine, I always take note that the Castillo wakes up as early as I do. When you rise earlier than dawn, it's very easy to see who else is awake with you.

Workers arrive early, checking out the grounds and tending to the property. I'm watching the sunrise, and I hear the lawnmower already operating. I wave hello to the sun, and I see National Park Service employees diligently going about their work day. By the time I finish my sunrise livestream, it's usually almost time for the Castillo to open up to the public for the day, and the parking lots are filling up fast.

And just as quickly as the parking lots reach capacity, the line for tickets into the Castillo grows. Everyone wants to see the fort when they visit this lovely town.

I see the NPS workers communicating with and educating the public about the Castillo, as well as all the NPS workers who keep the Castillo alive physically. I can only imagine how much work and continual maintenance is required, with ocean waters splashing against it no less, to keep this amazing piece of history alive for future generations to see and learn from.

Just last month, I saw a worker patching up pieces of one of the barrier walls with what I can assume was some sort of masonry or brickwork/stonework tools. It was background noise to me - (peaceful) background noise - as I watched the sun rise above Anastasia Island. I always love to see the fort being worked on and cared for. In fact, In another life, I'd love to be a National Park Service employee. That list of dream jobs remains a mile long, including wanting to be a meteorologist, but I can dream nonetheless.

The Castillo is well taken care of every time I'm there. Visitors love the Castillo, and the National Park Service employees love the Castillo. It always seems to me that the general public, as well as all the fort caretakers, very sincerely love the Castillo, and care for the well being and survival of this historic fort, for the historical significance, and educational aspects the fort provides.

I have been live-streaming from downtown St. Augustine for a few years now, coming here regularly - once a month to stream from this very historic city. St. Augustine is one of my favorite places in the world, and I do believe the town is such a special treasure to The Sunshine State.

As I sit here planning out my schedule for next month's livestreams, it has already crossed my mind that I'm preparing to livestream from St. Augustine once again - very soon. And it's a very strange feeling to me that the Castillo may still be closed in the next couple weeks.

I wonder when this shutdown will end? I wonder when the National Park Service employees will be able to get back to taking care of the Castillo. I wonder how much maintenance is now lacking, and how much imperative maintenance work is now being delayed at the fort. I can only imagine that it all adds up, and fast. Florida weather is harsh on any structure, but one that is hundreds of years old is simply a whole different ball game. And importantly, I wonder when the next batch of visitors will be able to cross through those gates once again?

I have no idea when the federal government will open up. As I write this, I imagine that the shutdown could end directly after I hit publish. Friday night - TGIF! And, just the same, I can imagine the shutdown continuing many, many more weeks, leading into some far off date that no one can possibly even comprehend.

At 44 years of age, it feels like I've now lived through many government shut downs. And it seems that we always tend to figure things out and get moving once again. But during it - in the moment - it always feels so ominous...

I have no answers - but I do know one thing. I'll be quite happy to see that line of visitors, queuing all the way from the ticket booth, down the hill and into the parking lot, once again.~

463) Quick personal update - livestreams from Walt Disney World - April 2025

PUBLISHED Thursday 4.17.25

Hey there fellow dreamers, coming to you from Walt Disney World Resort. Unfortunately, I’ve already done too much, and it wasn’t a lot at all in my mind, but it was too much for my body right now. And I’m not well enough to do an upcoming livestream tomorrow.

I do hope you’ve enjoyed what I have been able to show you so far of the absolutely beautiful Fort Wilderness Resort, Disney Vacation Club cabins, and just the beautiful layout of this expansive and peaceful property here.

The most exciting thing so far for me was seeing that big turkey on the livestream today!

So, my plan is to NOT stream (tomorrow or Saturday at all) to help force some life back into me, and hopefully I can still stream Easter morning. If I can’t, I’ll cancel it so the scheduled stream isn’t sitting out there.

I’ll still be filming everything I do here, and tomorrow I hope to see some of the chocolate Easter eggs that the cast members make each year, and do some resort hopping and ride the monorail and boats around.

Overall I’m just so sad that I am not even well enough to do a livestream at all though, as that’s what I love doing. But that’s just my personal feelings internally that I’d like to share with you. Otherwise I’m so grateful to be here at this most magical place on Earth, with all of my in-laws, making very special memories together. Thanks to you all for being another special part of that time here as well. It means the world.

395) It's Officially Christmas Cookie Week 2024!

~ Peppermint Candy Cane Cookies ~

I can’t believe it’s finally here! I look forward to this week all year long. It’s officially Christmas cookie week 2024, baby!

This week we will be making and preparing the cookie dough on Thursday, December 19th. And because we need the dough to set and chill for at least eight hours, we will be doing the actual baking in the oven on Friday, December 20th.

These dates have been strategically set… You see, we live over a thousand miles from our family. And we have some family coming down to Florida this Christmas, making the long drive from Chicago in the car, pooch included! They arrive on Saturday, December 21st. And I plan on having a batch of perfectly assembled freshly baked cookies in a holiday cookie tin to hand to them upon their arrival.

It’s definitely not every day that we have family here who we can bake for. So I truly am extra excited about this year’s cookies, for that reason.

But there’s another reason I’m so very excited.

While we do a whole heck of a lot of baking, to my own surprise I have never made peppermint candy cane cookies before. I’ve gladly tasted them every year from friends and relatives, and always wanted to attempt them, but just never have.

So, as yet another holiday season is upon us and flying by at the speed of light, I’m also extra excited for the fact that we will be trying something new - together. And, I’m really hoping we can pull this one off, lol.

Will there be too much overpowering peppermint taste, drowning out the taste of the cookie? Will there not be enough peppermint taste in each bite? Will the red and white dough bleed together? How many cookies will this dough actually make? Will there be enough for a full tin to give away? And endless other questions and concerns swirl in my mind.

But, you know what? None of that really matters.

The only important thing that matters here is the act of baking. Togetherness. And our community of dreamers - sharing in the joy of a holiday cookie. Good tidings and cheer, shared with one another throughout the season.

My grandfather was a baker for over 40 years. I talk about him a lot, and I miss him even more. But I do believe he instilled my love for baking inside of me. And that special magic that can happen in the kitchen. The feeling of family, and laughter, and getting our hands all messy and sticky.

Food, family, friends, fun. The act of making food together, and sharing food together, can really bring people together in spirit as well. And help instill the value of togetherness and community.

Baking has become so important to me and my life over these years that I do incorporate baking into my blog here and into my YouTube Channel. I prefer livestreaming the baking process, because that’s where the magic happens, in real time.

Last year, we had a flour explosion… even the vacuum had to make an appearance - all before one cookie was ever placed in the oven - we had a royal mess.

But really, I do like livestreaming the baking process because it shows in real time how long each step takes, and what the entire process of building a recipe is in real life, mistakes included, silliness too.

I do hope you enjoy baking along with us this week on Thursday and Friday. I’d love to know if you’ve ever made candy cane cookies? They’re a pretty popular Christmas cookie, so I’m assuming many of you have. But for those who haven’t, we’re in the same boat here this week. And either way, baking or not, I invite you to join us, with your favorite holiday drink in hand, for Christmas Cookie Week 2024!

Recipe:

Ingredients:

2 sticks unsalted butter
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1.5 tsp peppermint extract
1 tsp baking powder
0.5 tsp salt
2.75 cups flour
1 tsp red color

Directions =

DOUGH:

Using a stand mixer - mix butter, sugar, peppermint, baking powder, and salt, in the mixer.
Add egg.
Slowly add in flour, until mixed.
Separate dough in half.
Color half red - mix in.
Wrap each half in saran wrap separately.
Chill dough for 8 hours.

BAKING COOKIES:

After fully chilled for 8 hours:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Pinch off 1 inch balls of dough and roll out to 5 inch long ropes - one red, one white.
Twist ropes together.
Place on a cookie sheet 2-3 inches apart, and curve to create candy cane shape.
Add sparkling sugar - if desired.
Bake cookies 8-10 minutes until edges are just barely brown.
Let cookies and baking sheet cool completely before the next batch is placed on the tray.
Bake. Enjoy. Share. Dream.

358) Yacht Basin Park in Jacksonville, Florida's Historic Riverside Neighborhood

Love Life... At Yacht Basin Park.

This amazing and free park is located along the bank of Willowbranch Creek - just before it flows right into the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida.

I'm so glad to have discovered this quiet little spot, and can't wait to go back again. It was located at the end of our walking tour of Jacksonville's historic Riverside neighborhood. We strolled down Riverside Avenue on Friday, covering areas I haven't live streamed before.

It always amazes me when I find lovely little parks such as this one. It's tucked away at the end of the street, just one property behind the river, and directly along the creek. There are a few designated parking spots, and plenty of benches and places to sit and have your coffee or lunch. There's a gazebo with mosaic tile art all around it, bird baths, and little pathways to explore.

My favorite part of Yacht Basin Park were the trees, including a single, massive live oak tree draping over the park and providing much needed shade. Its branches telling the story of its long life, growing angled downward straight into the ground and then back up toward the sky again, over and over. I always wonder how many hurricanes such a tree had to endure, and survive, in order to take that journey, and grow to such an old age?

I think such a tree must have seen a hard and painful life, protecting this precious little park and all who come to visit. Watching tropical storms and storm surge come right up to it many a time. But I also think this tree must really love its life just the same.

When you look up at a tree, do you see the journey it took, and the life it had to live, in order to be alive in this present moment with you?

Our first ever Hallow-Stream really was quite a success! And as Genevieve sounded like a wolf in the wild as she played with her new toy, she most definitely agrees. So as we gear up for the week ahead, I'm so glad to have these images to look back on.

There was a lot of laughing involved, so much so that my stomach hurt, lol. It's kinda funny how a simply DIY craft project from Target that cost $5.00 per box, with an abundance of very spooky and googly eyes that glow in the dark, no extra supplies needed, could bring about so much joy and happiness.

And I guess that was kinda the whole point. A basic Halloween decoration, iced tea, some random box of angel food cake thrown in for good measure, plus our first ever Dunkin apple cider donut. And we can't forget our unofficial Halloween advent calendar - the Squishmallow mystery box - and we'll call it a Happy Hallow-Stream!

And while it's also kinda mind-blowing that another hurricane is headed to Florida this week. As I wait, and watch endless weather forecasts, and worry about those in the path, and wait some more. I know I gotta keep moving, and keep moving forward. So I think I'm really looking extra forward to our sunrise tomorrow morning. To help us kickstart the week off on the right foot, just as we usually do. But maybe, just maybe, the rest of the week we can throw to the wolves - spooky mystery wolves with googly eyes - of course.

Good evening fellow dreamers. Join me for ‘Street to the Beach’ in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Today we are checking out the town of Jacksonville Beach and the beach itself before Hurricane Helene gets bad. We are in the outer bands on the Atlantic Ocean side of the storm.

After this livestream the storm strengthened again from a Category 3 to a Category 4 hurricane before landfall on the Gulf coast. I do hope everyone in the path is safe, well, dry, and my best wishes and love sent your way, always.
